One with the Force: Exploring the Philosophies that Defined the Star Wars Universe

With Star Wars Celebration coming to an end and as a Star Wars fan myself I'm surprised it took me this long to create a post exploring the philosophies that surrounds the Star Wars universe and binds it much like the force. 

The Star Wars universe is renowned for the rich tapestry of philosophies that have shaped the beliefs and actions of its many characters. From the Jedi Code to the Sith Code (Both of these codes can be found at the bottom of this blog), there are countless ways in which the Star Wars galaxy grapples with the big questions of life, the universe, and everything in between.

 

Naturalism is a philosophy that places emphasis on the importance of nature and the natural world. In the Star Wars universe, naturalism is often associated with the Force, a mystical energy field that flows through all living things.

The Jedi Order is founded on the belief that the Force is a natural phenomenon that can be harnessed for good. They see themselves as guardians of the natural world, using their powers to maintain the balance of the Force and ensure that the galaxy remains in harmony.

The Sith, on the other hand, view the Force as a tool to be wielded for their own personal gain. They often use the Force to manipulate the natural world and bend it to their will.

 

Stoicism is another philosophy that has a significant presence in the Star Wars universe. Stoicism is a school of philosophy that emphasizes the virtues of self-control, reason, and inner calm in the face of adversity. In Star Wars, stoicism is often embodied by characters such as Yoda, who remain calm and collected even in the face of extreme danger.

Jedi knights are also encouraged to develop a stoic mindset, as it allows them to remain focused and clear-headed in the midst of battle.

For the Sith, however, stoicism is viewed as a weakness. They believe that emotions such as anger, hate, and fear are more powerful than reason or self-control.

 

Positivism is a philosophy that emphasizes the importance of empirical evidence and scientific inquiry. In the Star Wars universe, positivism is embodied by characters such as the droids, who rely on logic and reason to navigate the galaxy.

The Jedi also use positivist methods, using the Force to sense and analyze the world around them. However, the Sith are often portrayed as being opposed to positivism, relying instead on their own intuition and emotions to guide them.

They believe that the Force is a power that cannot be measured or understood by science, and that their own inner strength is the most reliable tool at their disposal.

 

In conclusion, the Star Wars universe is home to a diverse range of philosophies that have shaped the beliefs and actions of its many characters. From naturalism to stoicism to positivism and so many more, these philosophies offer a window into the values and ideals of the Star Wars galaxy.

Whether you align with the Jedi or the Sith, there is much to be gained from exploring the many philosophical traditions that are woven into the fabric of the Star Wars universe.
